“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Quran 30:21)

This verse describes that the love and mercy between spouses is a sign from God. Spouses have the right to love, affection, and compassion for one another.

Right to good treatment

“Live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” (Quran 4:19)

Spouses should treat each other with kindness and avoid behaviors fueled by dislike or hatred.

Right to comfort and care

“They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them.” (Quran 2:187)

Spouses provide comfort, protection, and cover for each other and have the right to expect this from each other.

Responsibilities of Spouses

The Quran outlines the responsibilities that spouses owe to each other for a successful marriage.

Responsibility for providing financially

“Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth.” (Quran 4:34)

Men have the responsibility of being financially responsible for their wives and families. However, women can choose to contribute financially as well.

Responsibility to treat each other well

“And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them.” (Quran 2:228)

This verse emphasizes that men and women have similar rights over each other and have a responsibility to treat each other justly and with respect.

Responsibility of obedience between spouses

“Righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard.” (Quran 4:34)

Wives should be obedient to their husbands, and husbands should manage the household responsibly.

Seeking Understanding in Marriage

The Quran stresses the importance of understanding each other in marriage and resolving conflicts with wisdom and patience.

Resolve conflicts through kind dialogue

“And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them.” (Quran 4:35)

Differences should be settled through calm dialogue, involving others if needed, with the intention of reconciliation.

Act with patience and self-control during conflict

“Men are guardians over women because Allah has made some of them excel others, and because they (men) spend their wealth. So virtuous women are obedient, and guard the secrets of their husbands with Allah’s protection. Admonish women who disobey, do not sleep with them and beat them lightly. If they obey you, do not pursue a strategy against them. Indeed, Allah is Highest and Greatest.” (Quran 4:34)

Men and women are told to act with patience and self-control even during times of conflict. Physically harming spouses is prohibited.

Forgive each other’s mistakes

“Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.” (Quran 7:199)

Spouses should forgive one another and constantly aim to treat each other kindly. This maintains love and mercy between them.
